Chester was a stray in a small town without a shelter. No one claimed him so Waverly Pet Rescue took him in so they wouldn't have to put him down. He is now up-to-date on shots, tested heartworm negatve, and neutered.

Chester is about 6-months-old. Chester is a gentle soul. He has only known life in a kennel so anything outside of the kennel is scary for him. We are working on getting him used to life as a part of the family. Chester has beautiful curly hair and a curly tail. His pictures do him no justice! He is crate trained and we are working on housetraining with him. Chester does not jump and has not barked much. He is learning to trust us and is doing very well with this. Chester does well with other dogs and has no interest in the cats. He does well with the kids but does get overwhelmed when my four children (ages 4 and under) get to running around the house, so he will go lay in the corner away from the action. Chester wants a family that can help him learn what it means to be a part of a family.

7/31/10 UPDATE: Chester is a very gentle dog. He has been in a new foster home for about a week and he seems to be coming along well. He is still timid but he’s getting better every day. Chester is about 56 pounds now and could probably end up at about 80 pounds as he matures. He has learned to run and play and we’re close to getting this retriever to actually retrieve a toy! He is a bit clumsy when he runs but it’s great fun to watch! For the most part he seems to be potty trained. He has had an accident when we didn’t get him a timely opportunity to get outside. Most times he can hold it until we get him out on his leash. He seems to be pretty good on the leash, until he encounters something new. We spent about 15 minutes one day just learning that the mailbox is NOT a scary monster. He’s been great with the other dogs and does not mess with the cats. So far, we have not heard Chester bark at all. He is a low to medium energy level dog so may require a little less exercise than a typical Chessie, but will need enough daily exercise to keep him content. Chester needs patience and understanding while he learns to overcome his shyness. Anything more than a slight verbal correction is probably too harsh. He does take mild correction quite well. Chester will need somebody who understands the needs of a shy dog and will help socialize him and teach him how best to behave in all situations. He is good in his crate and it seems like he likes having a few toys around to chew on. Chester is a good dog with great potential.
The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a very unique dog breed and it would be a good idea to read up on them if considering Chester. What they are NOT is a Labrador Retriever with a curly coat. They tend to find their own little spot in a corner and watch the world go by. They do not crave a great deal of affection so sometimes may seem aloof. They ARE very smart dogs and extremely loyal. Once a Chessie makes a connection with his owner he will do everything he can to please them. They are great swimmers, well suited for cold water and cold weather. In the right situation, Chester will be an outstanding family pet.

Will someone please adopt Chester and give him a forever home? $125.00 adoption fee. (vet bill came to about $95, that is why his adoption fee is $125)

WE ARE A NO-KILL 501 C 3 NON-PROFIT RESCUE. All donations are tax deductible. We do not have a shelter yet. All pets live in foster homes. We only adopt to indoor homes. To see an animal, you must fill out an application first and then once approved, we can set up for you to meet the animal you are interested in. We do background checks on all applicants. If you have assault, domestic abuse, or drug charges please do not apply. If you have questions, please send an email to Email Waverly Pet Rescue at the bottom of this page. All animals see a vet for shots and normal exams. If they appear healthy and there are no obvious health concerns, then extensive testing is not done.
