My Story

Meet “Champ”. We guesstimate his age to be 7-8 years young. He's one of our larger fellas at about 70 lbs.

Champ arrived in our rescue program in March 2008, where he came to us as a stray and was diagnosed with heartworms. He was treated and is heartworm free.

He was adopted out in September 2008, but was returned to rescue when he didn’t mesh with the other male GSP in the home. Since the adoption time was very short, we are unsure if it was just the expected adjustment period or if Champ would do best in a single dog home. We want Champ’s next home to be his ‘FOREVER’ home so we think a home where he’ll be the only pet will be best.

Champ has just moved into a new foster home and is doing WONDERFUL. His foster Dad reports that Champ is very friendly with everyone, adults and children. He doesn’t jump up and only sniffs for a minute while he waits patiently for lots of petting.

Champ is fine in a crate. He does not bark or whine and goes in without any complaint. Even at night, not a peep. In fact, Champ rarely barks at all.

From March 2008 to September 2008, Champ was boarded at a volunteer’s kennel and we were unsure of his housetraining. He had about 2 days of "marking" with his adoptive family , but since he has been in his new foster home, he has had NO issues with "marking" or any accidents.

Champ loves to go for walks. Besides some initial pulling, after a few minutes, he walks like a perfect gentleman. He may need a couple reminders, but overall, no complaints here.

Champ seems focused when you talk to him. He knows basic commands like sit, down, no and crate. He’s learning stay, but the anticipation is very hard. His foster Dad says he’s very smart and will master that in no time too. He doesn’t counter surf and does not jump on the table or beg for food. He relaxes a few feet from the table while you enjoy your meal. He does not sit on any furniture either.

Champ loves to ride in the car. He stands or sits most of the time so he doesn’t miss anything passing by. Eventually he will lie down. You tend to forget he’s there as he never barks or whines.

Champ would make a great companion for someone who just wants company going for walks or hanging around inside. He’s very easy going. He can hang outside and will wait patiently to be invited back in. He is a Velcro dog and will lay next to you forever.
