My Story

THIS DOG IS IN A FOSTER HOME AND NOT AT THE SHELTER. One Sunday night at 9PM, Calvin's foster-mom-to-be received a call from one of her rural neighbors in Appalachian Kentucky asking if she would come down to his place and catch a stray dog who had been "stealing" his outside dog's food. Since the man had been trying to chase Calvin off for 2 weeks, he could not help catch Calvin because the dog had become afraid of him. Since Calvin was intent on zeroing in on the only readily available food supply in the vicinity where he had been dumped, he was not about to disappear into the hills as the neighbor had been hoping. Calvin's foster mom gave up on catching him after about 45 minutes of sitting on a cold gravel driveway late that night in less than 50 degree weather. The neighbor was told to befriend the dog over the coming days by throwing food out to him and babytalking. Eight days later, right after adopting out another foster dog, Calvin's foster mom got the call to come get him. On 2/25/04, when Calvin was tested negative for heartworms (thank goodness), he weighed 47.7 lbs. and was estimated at one year of age. With healthy nutrition, Calvin had attained his optimum weight of 52.4 lbs. by July. This beautiful boy is a mix of two of the best of canine personalities--Golden Retriever and Beagle. Obviously, his coloring and larger size (measuring 21 inches from the base of his neck to the base of his tail) come from his Golden heritage; and his short hair, shorter legs (stands 18 inches tall at the shoulder), and ears come from his Beagle parentage. He will not get any larger. He wants to be the only dog in his home but would very much enjoy having some human children 7 years and up to run and play with. This "Golden Beagle" is a very affectionate and gentle boy and would make a fabulous addition to a home-oriented family to hang out, love and play. He has been started on heartworm preventative, vaccinated, and neutered. Additional photos will be emailed to prospective adoptors. For more info, please email or call Kim Perry at (606) 638-0512.
