My Story

Adoption pending!

Redbone coonhound, young male, about 2 years old, relatively small (50-55 pounds)

It's pretty rare that we see a redbone coonhound in our rescue, and there is a reason for that. They have a cult following composed of everyone who has every met one. Innocent, pure of heart, comical yet sincere, redbones take to their jobs as man's best friend like a fish takes to water.

All redbones are characters. From their large paws to their floppy ears, from their distinctive yodels of happiness to their gracious clumsiness, a redbone is a dog that could have thousands of pages written about him.

Buckeye is a faithful companion to humans, and an ardent and deferential playmate to his foster siblings. He allows his foster sisters to boss him around with no sign of resentment -- Buckeye was born to take the little brother role.

Not a day passes that Buckeye does not cause his fosters to shake their head or laugh helplessly at his escapades. They have watched him several times arrange himself carefully on a chair for a nap and fall into a sleep so blissful that he somehow fell out with a thud on the floor, only to scramble back up on the chair, none the worse for wear.

Buckeye (who has been nicknamed "Red" by his foster mom) plays with as much abandon as he sleeps, and he romps wildly with his foster siblings. Their play is so ardent and over the top that you have to stop and watch, no matter how many times you have seen it happen that day.

Buckeye is appropriate in the home, and he only vocalizes to tell you something, typically that he is overjoyed with something. In other words, although his bark is distinctive (and so cute), you won't hear it constantly!

When you see him in his foster home, it's hard to believe that Buckeye was a neglect case. He was left chained out without food, and was seized by animal control in Tucker County West Virginia. The animal control officer there contacted us to tell us about the friendly redbone who was so grateful for everything and who positively bounced with happiness when he walked. . She was absolutely convinced that this pathetic little red guy was sent to her for a purpose -- because he was meant to be in a loving home. She was sure that his love for humans (it is clear he was not mistreated by his former owners, simply "forgotten") will help him find the loving home he truly deserves.
