Update 7/14/07: Brewster would be a great addition to a dachshund family or anyone looking for a small dog. Even though he is described as an adult, he is quite animated and full of energy. He loves to cuddle and sleep in bed with you.
6/16/07: Brewster is in foster care in Maine. I just picked up Brewster on Saturday. He is very sweet, quiet and gentle. He is still settling in though and somewhat timid and unsure yet. He is getting along just fine with my other small dogs and cats. He is attentive and eager to please. He still needs help with potty habits. I think he is not used to walking on a leash but we will work on that. He is already bonding as he follows me around and sleeps next to my bed at night. Although he is midddle age you would not know it by looking at him. He is missing the foot of his right hind leg but gets around very well, including going up and down steps. He will make dear pet for a dachshund or small dog lover.
Brewster is approximately 7 years old. We rescued him from a breeder who was going to put him down because he was no longer "producing." As is almost the norm for our partner shelter when they take in a dog from a non reputable breeder, Brewster has not received proper veterinary care. His teeth are awful and infected. Brewster is missing the foot on his left back leg. Brewster weighed 12.6 pounds at his vet visit May 9, 2007.
What we do know from his time in a foster home is that Brewster is very sweet, gentle and loving, and is also very smart. After just a few hours of being in the home, he figured out how to use the doggie door. His disability does not effect him at all as he goes up and down the short stairs. Brewster gets along with the 4 dogs and 1 cat in the home too. He is learning what grass is and that outside is where he needs to go potty. Brewster is crate trained and does very well. If he starts crying, all the foster parent has to do is say "shhhhhh" or "quiet down" in a soft voice and he does it .
May 3, 2007 - UPDATE: Brewster is now at our partner shelter in Arkansas living with the director and her husband. He is doing very well with the other dogs and is still working on housetraining. Brewster is just such a "LUV BUG" and everyone just loves him.
We are recommending that Brewster go to a home without small children as a lot of commotion and noise scares him. He also is a bit shy and afraid at first when someone tries to pick him up but he has never shown any aggression.
