Bones-adopted!

Update 8/28/08: Here's Bones! He's a handsome, loving, laid back southern gentleman who's delightfully sweet to everyone he meets, and who doesn't see any need to rush through life at a breakneck pace. He takes his time to mosey around at his own speed, and if dogs were into flowers, he'd be the one taking time to smell the roses.

Bones loves kids, as you can see from his new photos, he loves to shower his human friends with doggie kisses. He's an outgoing fellow, especially compared to many shelter dogs, and he's always happy to meet new people. He's also recently learned about treats, and he thinks those are pretty great, too.

Bones is house trained, and his foster family has given him the run of the house already, since he is so well mannered. He will occasionally go in his crate for a snooze, but he has not been closed in there while his foster mom is out. He's happy to hang out with her resident dogs. Bones is also living with cats in his foster home, and he ignores them.

At about six years of age, Bones is a relatively low energy dog, so while all dogs need moderate exercise to be healthy, he won't run his people ragged. He's perfectly happy to curl up for naps at his foster mom's feet.

His foster mom sees a lot of dogs, and she says Bones has settled into her household fantastically well. He will make a wonderful companion for some lucky person who opens his or her heart to him!

Bones arrived in ME on 8.24.08 and is just as handsome as we thought! He's also a big sweetheart who's thrilled with all the new human attention.

He is now about 6-7 years old. He is a big boy (he could stand to go on a diet) and we think could be mixed with some newfie, but we really have no idea about his exact bloodlines.

Bones is a happy dog. He's a very calm, mellow guy who is good with everyone he meets. He gets along well with his foster family's dogs and hasn't paid much attention to the cats. Stay tuned for updates!

Bones is approx. 4 yrs old in January 2006. He is GORGEOUS, isn’t he??

Bones suffered an injury that almost cost him his leg. The vet thought that he was such a great dog that he let us make payments for Bones' surgery instead of having us put him to sleep. It was a long hard road for Bones and the Director but now Bones is doing great and has very little trouble with the leg. He has a metal rod in his leg, and does have a slight limp, but that doesn’t slow him down at all. However, it is likely he’ll need some arthritis medication later in life due to this injury.

Because of this injury, he needs to be able to run around and not be tied up or kept inside. He's large but very friendly and gentle. He will need a family with a 6’ high fenced yard, as he is a jumper and can clear shorter fences. However, he should never be kept outside unattended, no matter what size fence. He needs to be an inside dog (with the opportunity for daily exercise) as he deserves all the love and attention he can get – he missed out on it earlier in life!

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!

. We pay a Transportation Service from Arkansas to bring the dogs to New England. The adoption fee is $250.00 for altered dogs. $350. for unaltered puppies, with $100 refundable after spay/neuter. All Senior dogs 6 years or older have a reduced adoption fee of $200. This includes vaccinations, spay/neuter and transport from Arkansas to Maine on a USDA approved transport, with a Health Certificate. All dogs are quarantined 14 days prior to leaving Arkansas... All dogs will be tested for Heartworm prior to adoption. Almost Home Rescue will process your adoption.
