My Story

Blackjack ~2-year-old male black Lab mix 75-lbs Neutered Background. This young dog was found roaming the streets of Fairfield. The finder notified the local animal control and made "found dog" postings but no one came to claim him. The finder decided to hold onto him during his stray hold period and contacted us for help finding him a new home. What a wonderful dog - we have named him "Blackjack". He is curious, playful, energetic, goofy, and loyal; and he gets along great with our existing female dogs. Blackjack is house-broken and crate-trained. We crate him during the day a couple times a week for 5-6 hours and sometimes overnight. He goes on at least one walk per day, usually with our other dogs. When meeting new people, Blackjack needs a proper introduction and a little bit of time to process; but once he is comfortable, he gets along great with new people. Our nieces (ages 3 and 9) come over frequently, and Blackjack does very well with them. We have cats and he barks at them – we have not trusted him to be off leash in the vicinity of the cats. At his core, he is a sweet boy and will be a wonderful member of the family. He just needs some training. He has shown that he is able to learn, it will just take time and patience from his new family. What Blackjack's current foster says. Major goober dog. Playful, inquisitive, affectionate. Sleeps through the night on dog bed in my bedroom; wakes me up at 0600 with a cold wet nose in my face. Loves his morning belly rubs. House-trained. Does not like being crated. Can be left alone in the house for a few hours -- but be sure to clear counters of food stuff. Loves biting at the hose stream and playing in the kiddie pool -- have not taken him down to the river yet. Eager to go for walks; still kinda all over the place though. Barky when we first meet other dogs -- he wants to run right over to meet them. We take lots of trips to Home Depot so he can meet folks -- he loves the mulch aisle best. Loves being outside during the day and evening -- really likes to watch the world go by, chase squirrels, and investigate things. What Blackjack’s Rescue Rep says. This young guy would do great in a home with other dogs and/or kids. Needs continued work on walking on a leash. Not for a home with cats. Needs slow introductions to new people and other dogs due to his barky reactivity. Blackjack is a bit of a project dog. Not for the faint hearted. Best for a rural or suburban home -- not a good city dog. Not for first time dog owner. Eager to learn and obey -- Would do great with some training. Would do best in a home with lots of room for him to run. No idea what breed he is mixed with; maybe border collie or shepherd. Medical. In great health. Current on vaccinations, heartworm negative, microchipped and neutered. If you want to adopt Blackjack, please contact Rescue Rep Dave at [email protected].
