Foster Mom Report - November 2009
Blackie is an active, energetic dog who loves to walk and play. He is now house trained and continues to show attention to his foster mom's commands. Currently, Blackie knows how to stay "out" of the kitchen (he's superb at this), and knows the word "heel" (still learning but will heel after only 2 or 3 reminders). Although Blackie is in need of further training, it is amazing that he has partially learned heel while walking with 2 other dogs. His foster mom feels he shows excellent promise for further training. Blackie could be an ideal playmate for a dog of similar age with spunk and confidence but could also be the only dog in the home. Although Blackie is "submissive" in the sense that he wants to please his foster mom, he would have too much confidence and energy for a docile or unsocialized dog. At 10 pounds, Blackie seems larger due to his height (approximately 11" at his shoulder). Being part Chihuahua, Blackie has the incredible jump of that breed, amplified by his long legs. While he loves to bounce around in play, he is also very receptive to affection and cuddling in your arm for a nap. If Blackie were a human, his foster mom thinks he'd be an 11 year old boy who'd be out playing street hockey. Blackie could do well with a family as he was raised this way, with a family who had a 5 year old boy (Blackie was surrendered because the home had too many pets). While Blackie would do well with a dog of similar spunk temperament, he would overwhelm a very docile dog due to his level of play. Currently,Blackie plays and wrestles with a spunky 5 lb Pomeranian puppy who gives as good as she gets and is not intimidated. Blackie lives with two senior dogs in his foster home whom he gets along with, however, as such an active and young dog, he would be more ideally suited to a dog of similar age and temperament. For someone who wants a bright, whacky dog who makes them laugh, who would be a great candidate for training, Blackie would be a great dog.
Foster Mom Report - November 2009
Blackie continues to demonstrate wonderful amiability with every person, child and dog he meets. He is now 98% house trained (accidents are rare or never if his queues are noted). Blackie loves to play with other dogs, shows no aggression to anyone and enjoys visitors to the home (after a bit of barking with strangers). If you like waking up in the morning to a little whiskered face full of kisses, who will arrange your arm for a tummy cuddle, Blackie is your man. There is nothing more delicious than rubbing his tummy while he tries to adore you and is barely able to keep his eyes open. Blackie has a lot of confidence, is very submissive by nature and wants to listen and please. He will not chew other objects in the house if he consistently has a bone to chew (he is barely over a year old and this may be a puppy thing.)
Foster Mom Report - October 2009
Blackie is a star candidate for training. ( Foster Mom thinks he may be a show dog in Chihuahua's clothing!) It is very clear in the first month in his foster home that he is quite bright and really wants to be a good dog. Foster mom is surprised that such a young and playful dog has already learned to sit outside of the kitchen on command (not even moving when the other dogs enter); and sit away from the front door on command when foster mom comes and goes. Blackie comes when he is called (he is only called for affection and good things) and is always a submissive dog. In fewer than 3 weeks, Blackie's housetraining is about 75% (from zero). He now goes out on leash, is starting to learn to ask, and has fewer accidents (a bit of crating and belly bands will help as he learns.) Considering Blackie lives with 3 other dogs in a new foster home with a new mom (who has never house trained a dog before!) this is quite an accomplishment (for both of us!)
Blackie is never aggressive or harmful. He is always extremely gentle and has a very soft mouth in play. He love his snuggle with foster mom when both are napping, and is a world class expert at curling himself into your arms and snuggling his head in under your chin, while squiggling to make it just right to rub his tummy.
Although Blackie loves to be the favorite dog (the first for the cookie, the fastest to walk) he plays really well with the three other dogs in his foster home. He is not at all food possessive (in fact, he's willing to take some of theirs!).
Blackie is a very genuine, loving, caring little dog who deserves all the attention and time a very loving home can offer. If your are looking for a little dog who would be a great investment of your time and effort, Blackie is one of the best candidates you could possibly find.
Foster Mom Report - October 2009
Blackie is an extremely playful good natured dog who loves to be loved and will do anything for a cuddle. He’ll lie on his back in your arms, give you his “wrapt gaze” and cover your nose with kisses. He is also full of jumps and joy. Blackie still needs training to leave un-attended food alone and other items that he might pick up and chew (mostly he sticks to his chew bone though).
Blackie needs house training as he was casually trained to use a deck and never learned to relieve himself on leashed walks. In his foster home, night crating is starting to help Blackie house train for going outside on leash. Blackie walks very lightly on a leash and in foster care is walking well with two other dogs.
Blackie gets along with all three dogs in his foster home and is very playful, but he would also be happy to be the sole center of attention. He would not need another pet in the home if he were not alone all day. In his previous home, Blackie played well with a boy who was experienced with dogs.
Blackie is a very fast and agile little dog who could squiggle into the tiniest of spaces in the blink of an eye. Therefore, Blackie must be in a home with an extremely escape-proof fenced yard and much care must be taken to prevent him from bolting into unfenced outdoors.
For a small dog, Blackie has a healthy bark. He barks when people walk by the home and in play. Otherwise, he can spend hours in peace with his family at home. Because Blackie’s voice is strong, an ideal home would be a house, and not an apartment building.
Nearly 100% Chihuahua, Blackie lives for kisses and shows great willingness to please and listen to the person who loves him. He is very smart and just waiting for the right owner to love him and teach him all he needs to know. Because of his responsiveness to affection and attention, Blackie is a great candidate for any training his new loving family would provide.
