My Story

The odds are stacked against this boy. Not only is he a black lab, which for some reason are increasingly hard to adopt out, but he also came to the shelter with an old injury to his eye that did not heal properly, which left him with a not so pretty eye that may not function properly. We hope that someone out there will fall in love with this friendly boy and help him defy the odds and give him a forever home. Bear is a sensitive boy who wants nothing more to be loved. Typical of a lab, he wants to be with people. He cries, yes, cries when he is upset and lonely. He can't understand why his owner did not come looking for him. While he can be a bit noisy in his cage, once he is out getting some one on one attention he is quiet as can be (As I am typing this he is laying beside me quietly grooming himself after his bath!). He is a sweetheart of a dog who has won over the hearts of the volunteers that work with him. He is very good about being brushed and just soaks up all the attention he gets when volunteers are fussing over him and cleaning up his coat. He knows the commands "Sit", "Shake paw" and "down". He loves walks and is great on a leash! He has been around several of our young volunteers and does well. Bear is the very definition of an underdog. He is overlooked for the younger, cuter and undamaged dogs. He needs to find that special someone who will open up their heart and home and give this underdog the chance at a home he's always dreamed of. NOTES FROM HIS FOSTER MOM: We took him home Oct 31/09. He is an absolutely lovely dog who loves to be groomed. He should go to a home where he has lots of human contact (like most labs, they love to be with "their people). He is house trained, loves stuffed toys and does not pig out on the free range food in his foster home. He tried to chew on the leg of a wooden chair and a mat but when told to stop he stopped immediately and doesn't do it again. He also seems to love to pick up foster families shoes and move them around the house. He has not chewed any just re-arranges them! Our dog adoption fee is $150 which includes spay/neuter, shot, rabies shot and microchip. Puppies that are not old enough to be spayed or neutered prior to adoption will require a $300 refundable (upon proof of surgery being presented to MLDHS) spay/neuter deposit.
