Behavioral --
Per volunteer 7/29: I like to take out this shy, nervous boy because he is very house-trained. He's in a single kennel (H row) so doesn't have the extra kennel space to use the other side to eliminate. He's calm and very well mannered in his kennel, probably because he is still nervous. He is always wary when I open his door slowly coming forward, then allows himself to be looped. He walks cautiously through the aisles and once outside, he immediately relieves himself; he is very housetrained. He is easy to walk, no excessive pulling. He has a canine cold now, so we walked to the covered yard. He had no interest in toys, but did some smelling in the yard. Tonight he approached me, but knowing he's nervous and unsure, I only gave him gentle pets. He ate the treats I offered and then he laid down which I thought was a good sign for this shy boy. Since the covered yard is all dirt and stones, I walked him up the avenue to a grassy spot where I sat and he slowly laid down, and then he did a long army crawl over the newly mowed grass. Once he finished the crawl, he stood up, we walked back to the shelter and I returned him to his kennel.
Per volunteer on 7/24: Barnes is super shy but warms up so quickly!!! He was easy to leash and walked slowly outside with caution. After just a few minutes he came over to me for pets. Barnes has sweet soulful eyes. His tail was tucked in during our time together. Barnes was not interested in toys or fetch but he did sit for a treat but didn't eat it when offered. Barnes has some missing fur on his back and scaly skin on his back. Barnes' glow up will be amazing!
Per Volunteer 7/19/24: Barnes' first walk with me.
Barnes was lying on his bed in H row (the row of small kennels) when I approached him. I was able to loop him by offering him cheese and he very cautiously came out of his kennel. He walked slowly outside, relieved himself, and turned around to return to his kennel. I tried to coax him into a yard, but I know he is very scared, so I didn't want to make him any more uncomfortable. I returned him to kennel; he went in with no problem.
Per Staff 7/17/24:
BEHAVIOR EVALUATION:
KNOWN HISTORY:
-Stray. Came in with Noble
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Barnes was nervous in his kennel and was lying on his bed with wide semi soft eyes. I reached in and easily slipped the leash over his head. Once leashed he came out with a little tug of leash pressure. No issues returning
LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls minimally
HANDLING:
-In the room Barnes was very nervous and timid with us at first. He had a lowered body, tucked tail, trembling, and soft wide eyes. He slowly came over to me while I sat in the chair. He took cheese very gently from me and the other handler when offered, but remained nervous and flinched at fast movements. He allowed light spurts of handling and warmed up with time, allowing a bit more and more of petting on his head and back. He even did well with a third handler who entered the room. He allowed handling in small spurts from all three of us in the room and would army crawl closer to us. He did lots of yawning and big stretches to relieve his stress. We decided to bring Noble in after awhile. Noble and Barnes were SO excited to see each other and both became a lot more social and affectionate with the other present.
PLAY:
No interest
TOYS:
Interest but no possession
Per Staff 7/16/24:
7/16/24 9:43 am. Very scared, Have to use control pole, the female was protecting the male, very easy to walk on a leash to the kennels
