My Story

Update 4/29/08: Sadie Baby is ready to find her forever home! She's done very well in foster care. She's a sweet girl who never learned boundaries before, and she just needs some fair and consistent leadership from her people. She LOVES to please her people. She just needs to understand what's desirable and what's not.

Sadie is a snuggler. She loves tummy rubs and likes to rest with her head on her foster mom's shoulder. Very sweet!

Sadie is learning to walk like a lady on her leash. She still spends the night in her crate, but during the day, she has the run of her house. She likes to play with her foster family's resident dog. This weekend, Sadie Baby's foster mom took her to a puppy social at Petco and Sadie loved playing with the other dogs. There were a few children there, and Sadie was a bit shy, but she did sniff and warm up to them.

Sadie Baby's foster mom thinks she'd do fine in a home with another dog, or as an only child. Sadie should not be placed in a home with cats. She likes to chase them too much.

UPDATE 3/15/08: Sadie, formerly Baby, is an active, clever and happy girl who needs to find a new home. This young terrier mix has taken extremely well to obedience training. She knows all the basic commands and a few more, like "dance." She heels on her leash and is completely house trained.

Sadie loves to play with other dogs, and she's learned to play fetch with people, thanks to lots of training treats. She doesn't do so well with cats, she can't bring herself to stop chasing them, we would prefer not to place her in a family with cats.

Sadie has been crate trained and rides in the car without a fuss. She loves toys, especially tennis balls. She loves human attention, and particularly enjoys a nice scratch on the back. Sadie is a nice size, at about 30 pounds, but she's active and will need regular exercise. We believe she is about twelve months old.

Sadie has struggled with fear of new people. We don't know her full history, but it's possible that someone mistreated her as a puppy. She gets very stressed out by new people coming and going. A professional trainer has worked with Sadie and thinks the problem can be resolved. She would benefit from a calmer, more predictable environment.

Part of Sadie's problem is that she's so darn cute that everyone who enters the home wants to cuddle with her. That pushes Sadie way out of her comfort zone. She needs to warm to a person before snuggling up.

Baby's here in ME! Here is an update from her foster 8/12: "She is a doll! She is a tiny little girl who is approximately six months,25 pounds and very much full of puppy playfulness.

We changed her name to Sadie and she is adjusting very well. She spent her first evening exploring our home, digging through our "doggy toybox" and getting aquainted with our Rhodesian. She settled easily into her crate at bedtime.

Today, we visited friends with three dogs and a cat and she did extremely well with all. She loves to play and enjoyed a spirited wrestling match with her new friends.

She seems to love being around people. She has also had a chance to interact with the neighborhood children(ages 7+) and was shy at first, but quickly came out of her shell.

She pulls when walking on leash but we'll start working on her "manners" this week.

Update 8/6/07 from Baby's foster: She is currently around 25lbs, I don't think she is going to get much bigger (but I could be wrong). We believe she is 6-8 months (we think 8 but cannot be sure). She is good with kids, loves to play (dog toys are a must) if you toss a toy she'll go after it, then it might be a game of catch me if you want it back. Her playfullness can be a bit more then my 7yr and 3yr desire (more so thee 3yr). Cats, she has tried from time to time to engage the cat in play (whom wants to be left along). I have also seen my cat chase her and she will be hesitent when she has to cross the cats path. She did start out a timid, but she has come around and does want to be with people (it may be her personailtiy or a reflection of her life prior to the shealter?). I do try to take her for walks on a reg. basis and she enjoys them. She spends her night in a crate in my and mine husbands room, she does not whine. I did put her in our kennel for an afternoon and she was fine in their (no whinning or barking). <> 8-1-07 We'll I've been coming out of my timid shell. I am so happy when I am with people. I can be quick if you are trying to play catch me and love to chew on my doggie toys. From time to time I try to engage the cat into some friendly play, but she just isn't to interested in me. I enjoy going on my reg. walks with my foster mom. I am so eager to be someone's "Forever".

Update: 7-27-07, I’ve been in foster since the 25th. To my foster mom’s surprise I am a bit on the timid side, in the shelter I was very outgoing and friendly. Don’t misunderstand things, I am eager to give and receive love and let the kids (7 & 3yrs) hug and crawl all over me. Foster mom says she can even see a mischievous side to me. Considering that I’ve been in the shelter for over a month (foster mom picked me because I had been in their the longest out of her other choices) and thus that is where my comfort zone was. I will chase a ball if you toss it, and my mother said I did pretty well on my 1st walk with her yesterday. Foster mom has said that once her batteries are charged she will post some updated photos of me. Oh, and I’ve pretty much left the cat along since I’ve been here. I do have a lot of forever love for anyone that wants to adopt me.

**** Baby was surrendered to the shelter on 06/04/07. Baby is a tiny lab mix pup about 2 to 3 months old (approximately) and weighs appx 25 pounds. Very sweet dog and very QUIET. Please help us find Baby a home.

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
