My Story

Looking for a sweet, calm, easy-going companion to go on walks with or bring to beer gardens? Despite the scars on her face, Athena is a gentle giant that would be a great addition to almost any home. Her mellow, sweet nature makes her a great fit for someone wanting an around-town dog. If you're a homebody, no problem! She doesn't mind taking it easy and lounging around the house either. Need to work and can't bring her with you? No problem.. she'll let herself into her kennel and nap while you're gone. She is not a guard dog - she is an indoor companion. She is housebroken and will sit for treats, so we believe she was someone's pet before becoming a stray dog. She roamed around neighborhoods of San Antonio for months, before getting pregnant and delivering a litter of puppies underneath someone's house. She was then brought to the shelter with her puppies, and the shelter was going to euthanize them all due to lack of space. Fortunately, we took them in with just 3 minutes to spare! Puppies are always adopted quickly, while mothers sit around for months or longer looking for placement. Athena is great with both female and male dogs, but does best with dogs medium size or larger. She hasn't been tested with cats, but it was noted on her file that she has a prey drive, and should not go to a home with cats or small animals. She has no aggression with dogs or strangers playing with her babies, and hasn't had any issues with resource guarding food or toys. She's fairly easygoing. Her energy level may pick up once her body fully recovers from malnutrition, but her temperament is very sweet. She is emaciated and has very dull, patchy fur, but we are providing her all the vet care she needs (and she's heartworm negative). She is not yet spayed, but will be prior to adoption. She comes fully vaccinated and microchipped. To apply for adoption, email [email protected] with "[Your Last Name] adopt Athena" in the subject line. You will receive an automated welcome email with a link to our downloadable adoption application. Please fill that out and send it back to us. She currently does not have a foster, so if you are interested in fostering her, that is a great way to get to know her better in your own home.
