Meet the sweet and shy, 2 year old (35 lbs) April May! One of many rescued from a cruelty case, this Aussie mix girl came to us in rough shape but with a heart of gold. While she needed a fair bit of time to decompress, she took her antibiotics like a champ and trusted us enough to tolerate the required medicated baths. Once she got used to a comfy bed and having a full belly and a welcoming home, she began to trust and explore little by little. She’d never been in a house before, and every sound or sudden movement could make her jump. She had to learn how to go in and out of doors, use a potty pad, and do her business outside. April being so food-motivated was a great plus though, and it allowed us to build trust with her through hand-feeding. Eventually we were able to sneak in occasional pets. And now, she will accept a good belly scratch at bedtime. April has had a longer road to healing than many rescue dogs, but she has been so sweet and grateful along the way and shows it by always greeting you with a happy dance when you come home! April may never be the dog you can travel everywhere with or take to the dog park. But she is fine with any guests you may have in your home! She may never want to play and rough house with young children, puppies, or high-energy dogs. But she will share her snuggle spot with a fellow lazy dog who just wants a nap! She may not love the idea of going potty outside in a rainstorm (and honestly, who would?). But she’s a potty pro and will always use a pad if you aren’t home! She may not be terribly playful. But that just means you don’t have to worry about spending loads on dog toys or your favorite shoes getting chewed. While April is crate-trained and potty-trained, she would require more practice with leash skills. April would do best in a home with low-energy or submissive dogs or with her being the only dog. April doesn’t mind children as long as they give her space. She tends to keep a distance from our toddler (likely due to the loud sounds and unpredictability of toddlers). And while she hasn’t been taken out for much socialization due to her nervousness outside the home, she gets along great with our two dogs and all family and friends that come by. She’s also a quiet girl, only barking once or twice when a car pulls up. She doesn’t whine or beg either, but if you have something delicious she might sit by your side and boop you on the leg with her nose. This is April code for “please share.” It will be essential that April’s new family give her the time and space to build trust with them. We are confident that with patience, consistency, and love, this girl will quickly become a beloved member of the family. All she needs from you is TLC!
