My Story

***This is a courtesy posting for Waggin' Train Rescue*** Are you ready to fall in love? Well get ready for your heart to melt. I'd like to introduce you to sweet Antonia, an 18 month old Greater Swiss Mountain Dog and American Staffordshire Terrier mix. She has the beautiful markings of the Greater Swiss, but more the body type of a Staffie. Antonia was found as a stray on the streets of Manhattan, and taken to the shelter. Unfortunately her time had run out and she was slated to be euthanized. I received a plea for her literally just hours before she was going to die. After hearing her story, I was able to secure an emergency foster home for her so we could get her to safety. Once she was there, I was lucky to cross paths with Danicia who offered to take Antonia in as a long term foster until I could find her a home and family of her own. Since spending time with Danicia and her family, we have been able to learn much more about Antonia. She is completely housebroken and crate trained. She loves her crate, and sleeps in it on her own with the door open, using it as her den or safe place. She knows the commands Sit, Down and Paw and is very responsive. Antonia knows to sit before taking food from your hand, or while waiting for her meals. She is friendly when meeting people on the streets, but is more leary of some of them when they come into her home. Antonia can entertain herself for hours with fetching a tennis ball or playing with her toys. . Antonia loves to cuddle up and lean in for petting & comfort. She'll nudge your hand to remind you if you stop the affection. She weighs in at 60 pounds, but is still adding needed weight and has a bit of growing left to do, so may mature around 65 pounds. She is living with two cats right now, and shows some interest in them so would need to be with only dog savvy cats that can put her in her place if she gets too pushy with them. Antonia goes out on walks daily with a dog walker who is walking several other dogs at the same time. She gets along fine with them, but really doesn't engage them for companionship or play (she is not dog aggressive), which is why we feel that she would thrive in a home as the only dog. She also enjoys rides in the car and would be happy to join you on errands or road trips. Antonia is a truly great companion, and we feel would just thrive living out of the city and in a home dynamic that is more quiet with a regular routine and lifestyle (not a lot of visitor traffic or young high energy kids...which seem to stress her out.) In a quieter environment she is quite happy and content following you around doing whatever you want to do whether it's just hanging out or playing a game of fetch. If you feel your home is the perfect match for Antonia, please visit our website to fill out an application at www.WagginTrainRescue.org. Make it out to my attention (Nanette.) Antonia has just been spayed, vaccinated for rabies, distemper and bordetella, as well as heartworm tested (neg) and microchipped. The only thing she needs is a family and home of her very own.
