I'm Althea, a 3-year-old German Shepherd mix who is looking for a fresh start in my young life. I was surrendered to York County Animal Services after I had been hit by a car and my family opted not to pay for my medical care. The Humane Society of York County stepped up and sent me to foster care to await surgery for a fracture. But guess what? I had healed so well after several weeks of restricted activity that the vet said I didn't need surgery! My activity restrictions are lifted and I can zip up the stairs, shoo the squirrels from the yard or hop up on the couch for an afternoon nap. I'm doing so well that I've started some training and agility lessons at Zoom Room in Fort Mill. I have lots of skills: sit, down, leave it, come and stay. I'm an excellent leash walker and am so happy to be cleared for daily walks! I get along with other dogs, and have a resident dog in my foster home. I'm a very smart girl who learns new routines quickly. I speak up when I need to go outside and do my business, and I've never had an accident in my foster home! I'm an entertaining, fun-loving girl who loves to play with my toys and a good Benebone. I like to play catch and will toss you my toy or ball for you to throw back to me! Though I'm about 55 pounds, I enjoy being a lap dog - I love being with my people. I'm a talkative pup and probably would not be a good fit for apartment living. I can be vocal when I'm left all alone. True to my breed, I'm cautious meeting new people and need a few minutes to assess the situation.
