Since the World Cup had just started, the foster parents named the litter the FIFAs and gave the kittens soccer-related names. Pele was named both after the soccer star and as an abbreviation for "peg-leg"; when she was brought to the shelter, the ankle on her right rear leg had been crushed, and her leg was useless. The shelter splinted and bandaged Pele's leg before transferring her and her litter to Homeward Trails. Since then her leg has been resplinted several times and is healing well, and Pele has improved from being unable to walk at all to being able to scamper, hop, and pivot as fast as her siblings.
Pele's foster parents have raised 120 kittens, and they've been astounded both by Pele's positive attitude and by how well she's handled a setback that many kittens might not have survived. She's also a play-machine and one of the cutest kittens they've ever met.

You can save animals like Pele by becoming a foster! Fosters are like way stations between high kill shelters and forever homes. We need fosters so that we can save cats before they are euthanized at the shelters, so that they have more time to find a permanent family. If you are interested in becoming a foster, please check out our information about fostering animals.
