Oliver

Meet our friend Oliver! Oliver has been at the shelter since March 10, 2009. He was doing great here and loving life!! He got all the food and water he wanted and a nice warm bed to sleep in. The people are always nice here and are super friendly! About a month and a half ago we noticed that Oliver had some blood in his stool. It wasn't ever enough blood to be too concerned about, maybe worms so we de-wormed him. The blood in his stool never went away and we decided that he should see the vet to figure out what the problem was. When the Doctor saw Oliver he was in good spirits and purring like crazy. The vet did an exam and had a look to see if there were any lumps or tumors she could feel in his rectum. The tests came back negative for tumors and the blood in his stool was still a mystery. As with most colon problems that can't properly be diagnosed they call it IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) or colitis. Both are a form of inflammation and ulcers in the colon. The doctor sent him back with some medication to help bring down the inflammation and hopefully stop the blood from coming back in his stool. Shortly after giving him the medication prescribed by the vet Oliver had a seizure. It was a terrifying experience for all the staff and it felt like the seizure lasted forever. It was the only seizure any of the staff ever witnessed but there were suspicions that he was having seizures at night because his kennel was all messed up in the mornings. It has been over a month since Oliver's last seizure and he has been doing very well! Oliver is happy and energetic and loves to run around and play! He has been through a lot in the last few months and he deserves the greatest home possible! His new family will have to monitor him for any seizure activity and may have to take him to the vet for constant check ups to make sure he is still in good health. We have still not been able to determine what caused Oliver's seizure or the blood in his stool, and are not sure if the two were related and caused by the same thing. Oliver has stumped the vets and that he has made a full recovery has confused them even more. If you think you could be Oliver's new family please ask to meet him. He is truly a wonderful cat that has been through a traumatic couple of months. He may require more medical attention in the future and his new adopters will have to be aware of the potential medical costs that could add up if he continues to have more medical problems.
