My Story

Fluke Wheezy was found as a stray in Detroit near the river with a colony of cats back in December. She was evaluated, spayed, and given a dewormer and a rabies vaccine. But all was not well. She developed breathing difficulties, which was assumed to be due to an upper respiratory infection. But weeks went by, and her breathing problems continued. And nothing worked to alleviate the problem. Then Wheezy abruptly stopped eating. Wanting the best care for the kitty, her finder determined that the situation called for MSU VTH Emergency Services-but this is expensive, and so she was surrendered to us. At MSU she received oxygen therapy and fluids, was sedated, and extensive bloodwork and x-rays were performed, among other tests. One of those tests finally showed the problem. Wheezy had a parasite known as a lung fluke. This is a parasite that comes from ingesting crayfish or crab. (you can learn more here https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4860236/) Then her long road of treatment began, which included steroids, antiparasitics, and more x-rays. Her recovery is ongoing, but she appears to be out of the woods. While the parasite has cleared her lungs, they will continue to heal over time. She is looking for a calm home to call her own. She isn't the type of kitty to smother you with love, but will be a kind, caring companion for the person willing to give her a chance. This kitty is being adopted with a known and disclosed medical concern. Was diagnosed with lung fluke, treated while in care. Sporadically coughs. Will need annual veterinarian visits to continue to monitor health, could have possible asthma issues in future. ****To inquire about or to apply to adopt this kitty, please fill out our application. Adoption Fee $100. Note: *Because rescue cats do not come from breeders with specific backgrounds, the description is our best estimate of breed & is not guaranteed. *SBZ requests that adopted kitties be taken to your private vet to be established right away as moving around can be stressful- even if it's good stress- and cause reactions in their immune systems. *If you have dogs and other kitties, please make sure to do a slow introduction so they can learn about each other.
