My Story

The forgotten three... Basil and Ginger were part of a horrific hoarding case back in 2021. At the height of the pandemic, these little piglets were discovered living in appalling conditions. The owners had originally bought a few piglets on a whim from a flea market, not knowing they were already pregnant! With no knowledge or awareness of what the pigs needed, and on very little land, they allowed the pigs to continue to breed until they had over 80 pigs. These poor animals were emaciated, living in filth and starving. It was a shocking scene. Alerted by a neighbour, the local Animal Control reached out to Blind Spot Animal Sanctuary and a coalition of rescue groups was formed to help them. Blind Spot Animal Sanctuary took in 14 of the pigs and piglets. Initially, Basil and two of his cousins, Poppy and Cinnamon were placed into our foster family's care. The cousins were adopted and 2 more from the case joined Basil - those were also adopted, again leaving Basil behind. Another cousin, Ginger then joined Basil and they became close friends. Basil is the sweetest, outgoing and most loving pig. He doesn't know a stranger and flops over at the merest whisper of a belly rub and is affectionate and gentle. Ginger is a little more independent, and discerning - but he too loves attention once he gets to know you. Ginger is very handsome with a thick, shiny golden coat! Tiny Elvis Pigsley joined to make up the trio in January 2023 - he was a piglet who had presumably been an unwanted present only to be discarded after the Holidays. Elvis was found running scared in the streets around Charlotte. It took a couple of weeks for him to be caught and he was extremely thin, frightened and nervous. He has thrived in his foster home and Basil and Ginger's confidence around people has rubbed off onto him. He is a little hesitant around people he doesn't know, but soon warms up with patience and a few grapes (his favourite!) Basil, Ginger, and Elvis had 2 special visitors at the weekend! Photographers Will Belote and Colin Harrington both responded to a request for new photos! They topped by to capture the sweet natures of these three little pigs who have waited a long time for their forever family to find them. Please come to meet them, and consider adding them to your home. These three are a little family now and it would be fabulous to get them adopted together. There is a huge problem of unwanted/abused/neglected pet pigs in NC. Getting this trio of happy healthy pigs adopted would allow us and our fosters to take in some of the most vulnerable and abused animals that desperately need our help.
